You can learn from this experience!

I actually have a story for you! I was watching the University of Washington softball team play for a chance to go to the Women's College World Series. Their pitcher was player of the year last year and a candidate for that honor again this year. I watched her give up 5, yes 5, home runs in 5 innings pitched (3 occurred back to back to back in one inning). For the first time this year, she had to be taken out of the game. But you know what? She came back the next day and beat the same team twice. They couldn't touch her. She had had an off day the day before, but she learned from it and triumphed because she knows what she is capable of. You can do the same!

Take some time off to gather your thoughts and allow your body to heal. Then charge ahead to your next race! You're still my running hero!Elizabethhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16884347776489597720noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4927115969156269641.post-10508962200940757572010-05-29T16:13:19.810-04:002010-05-29T16:13:19.810-04:00((hugs) such a disappointment for you! you are suc...((hugs) such a disappointment for you! you are such a strong runner and i admire you greatly for *everything* you do. today just wasn't your day. there will be others and you will bounce back from this. allow yourself to mourn for the loss (because yes it is a loss and you can grieve) but know that this race will make you STRONG and BETTER and WISER.

you're still a running hero to me :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4927115969156269641.post-16601514624695328642010-05-29T15:54:11.785-04:002010-05-29T15:54:11.785-04:00Aww tfers... *hugs*

I know I found this to be the case for me: I ran my best training high mileage, but it caught up with me later. I slogged long after my first 100mpw, questioning why I'm "slower while recovering."
Looking back, I ran my PR's, and had my strongest comeback, while still "building up" i.e. 50ish mpw. I had a really smart coach point this out to me.

...of course now's not the time to get super analytical or make any big choices [while emotional], but something to consider. You really CAN'T evaluate how something works for you until after it's kicked in over time, and it's hard when after all that time it's not what you wanted. But you DO get something out of it all--a lot--and if what you want next is, say, sub-3, it just might mean entering a new kind of training for a different kind of goal [vs. high mileage].Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4927115969156269641.post-53609295452340252372010-05-29T15:35:34.547-04:002010-05-29T15:35:34.547-04:00Hey, I've been lurking on your blog since you ...Hey, I've been lurking on your blog since you started (hey!), but felt the need to comment on this post. I'm sorry today didn't go as you had hoped, but stay positive. You're a strong runner, as evidenced by your training, and if anything today was the "freak accident", not your PR. Take some time for yourself these next few weeks and let your body recoup. You've been pushing yourself really hard, both physically and mentally, so you deserve to rest. There are always other marathons. Regardless of today's outcome, I'm still in awe of your running.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03238343935677045559noreply@blogger.com
